I think taking this New Testament class has put me in the mood for a lot of religious art lately... And I thought I needed to do something for Ash Wednesday.
I was re-reading the four Gospels recently, and it struck me-really, really struck me-what a strong, courageous woman Mary had to have been...she KNEW, even before He was born, the suffering her son would endure: the suffering she would have to witness him endure, for her sake as much as any other human being's.
And yet she accepted that burden. I can't imagine being that brave.
She's supposed to look older here... I was going to fully color it, but something about the gray shading and sepia touch with the pale blue of her head scarf seemed to suit the emotions better.

That phrase, "behold your son" is from when Christ was telling John to take care of his mother, right? To me that brings an even deeper layer to the picture, like he's asking her to move on and she's closing her eyes to try to imagine a life without her son beside her...
